Implant Supported Dentures

Implant Supported Dentures

Patients with no teeth (edentulous) must resort to the use of complete dentures. Traditional removable dentures were often functionally not very efficient (i.e. presented difficulties with biting and chewing certain foods) and their use frequently resulted in gradual resorbtion of the lower and upper jaw bones. Resorbtion, in turn led to greater fragility of the jaw itself. Implant supported dentures address all of these issues. First, the use of implants significantly improves the overall functionality of the prosthesis, bringing it closer to the “performance” of the natural teeth. This allows patients to resume normal, or close to normal eating habits. Second, dental implants also act as “natural” roots and thus prevent any long term resorbtion of the jaw bone.
