Inlays and Onlays

These two types of restorations are used when there is decay present on the natural tooth surface. The main difference between an inlay and onlay is whether or not the “filling” covers or re-creates the tooth’s cusps (tooth’s protrusions). Unlike the traditional “filling” that is done by the dentist right in his / her office, inlays and onlays are designed and crafted in a dental lab. Historically, inlays and onlays were made of gold. Today, there are ceramic materials available that are just as durable as gold and yet are aesthetically more pleasing. The two main advantages of inlays and onlays are durability and better protection against recurring decay.

Also known as indirect fillings, dental inlays and onlays offer a stronger, well-fitting, more long-lasting solution to tooth decay or similar damage. These are beneficial from both an aesthetic and functional point of view and are a great choice if you have minimal to moderate tooth decay, offering an excellent alternative to full coverage crowns. The bonding process may improve the tooth's strength and help seal the inlay/outlay to the tooth. Dental Inlays and Onlays restore your smile while preventing further decay.
